HBO Max renews Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

Stuart’s attempts to restore reality will continue as HBO Max today renewed Stuart Fails to Save the Universe for a second season.

The renewal comes just four episodes into the show’s ten-episode debut season. According to HBO Max’s announcement, the Big Bang Theory spinoff is the streaming service’s second-biggest global comedy launch to date.

Amy Gravitt, EVP of HBO Programming and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy series, said, “We’re delighted with how this hilarious, genre-bending show from Chuck, Zak, and Bill has connected with the audience, both devotees of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and new fans alike. Along with everyone else, we can’t wait to see the worlds they conjure for these beloved characters next season.”

Channing Dungey, chairman and CEO of Warner Bros. Television Group and WBD US Networks, said, “Chuck, Zak, and Bill delivered something truly special with STUART FAILS TO SAVE THE UNIVERSE — a completely original take on one of the most beloved franchises of all time that captures the unique essence that made ‘The Big Bang Theory’ so special. It’s been an absolute joy to see audiences embrace this next iteration so passionately, and we can’t wait to continue exploring the multiverse in season two.”

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premiered July 23 following its debut at San Diego Comic-Con. The show received a “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while HBO Max highlighted positive reviews from Slate, NPR, The Wall Street Journal, CBR, TVLine and TheWrap.

There is still plenty of Season 1 to come. The fifth episode, “Spoiler: Bert Gets Married”, streams next Thursday, August 20. New episodes will be released weekly until the season finale on Thursday, September 24.

HBO Max did not announce a premiere date or episode count for Season 2.

HBO Max announces Stuart Fails to Save the Universe podcast

HBO Max has announced an official companion podcast for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, hosted by Wil Wheaton and Felicia Day.

The Stuart Fails to Save the Universe Official Podcast will release new episodes after each installment of the series, with Day and Wheaton breaking down Stuart's latest attempt to put reality back together. The hosts will discuss the show's biggest moments, Easter eggs, sci-fi references you might have missed, multiverse theories and behind-the-scenes stories from the new Big Bang Theory spin-off.

Wheaton is well known to Big Bang Theory fans for playing a fictionalized version of himself in the original series, and has long-standing sci-fi credentials from his role as Wesley Crusher on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Day created and starred in the web series The Guild, co-founded Geek & Sundry, and is also known for her recurring roles in Supernatural and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Guests lined up for the post-episode discussion include creators Chuck Lorre, Bill Prady and Zak Penn, along with stars Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie. Check out the podcast trailer on YouTube.com.
